Of the 5 Islands of Indonesia i’ve been so far, Flores is my favorite!
The green color of the Islands around Labuan Bajo is so very different from what i’ve seen so far. And luckily Still very untouched by tourists! Which makes it harder to travel the Island from one side to the other, and harder to find a clean bed to sleep in at some places, but makes a true travel experience you will never forget!
Labuan Bajo is such a refreshing & cool little city!
If you arrive at the airport you’ll have the usual people waiting outside for you to take you in to the city 🙂 As smart as I was, i went for the cheapest I could find hahah.. Can’t remember how cheap it was, but this guy walked us towards the streets and than we had a big laugh! I arranged two scooters!! Haha! So stept on the back with my backpack on and had a surprisingly pleasant drive into town.. Fresh wind thru your hair.. lovely 🙂
There are enough places to stay, eat & drink. Nice coffee shops, Italian restaurant and Hip food places! A lot of dive schools, boat tour agencies, though I suggest you go to the pier and find a nice boat & captain yourself 🙂
We spend a lovely day with Ari and his red/yellow/blue boat! We found him in the morning around 10 o’clock, paid him a little in front so he could purchase some diesel for the boat. We went back in to town got some snacks, bread and beer for the day and met up with Ari around 12.. Don’t forget to brings some beer for Ari and his deckhand 😉 He took us to Rinca Island to see the Komodo dragons, we did a walking tour there, it’s beautiful! After that we chilled at the boat had some lunch snacks and went snorkeling in the crystal clear water.
The main reason why we found our own Captain & Boat was that we wanted to see the komodo dragons but also see the flying foxes who come out during sunset. And there were only 2 agencies in town who gave that tour for a ridiculous expansive price. Plus you’d have to leave very early in the morning which meant you’d spend 13 hours on the boat.. A bit to much for our taste.
So we waited for the Island of the Flying foxes until they came out which is amazing!! They are so big! And there are so many! Really cool to experience. Together with a beautiful sunset, we had the most amazing day!
If you’re a beginner diver like me it was awesome to do the first drift dive here! We went to Sebayor , Manta Point & Tatawa Besar dive points. And spent a lovely day on the water with Wicked Diving school! Nice instructors & Great Boat!!
For food and drinks I can recommend..
- Hotspot Le Pirate ‘This is a great spot! A delicous menu and a rooftop with a little swimming pool’
- Restaurant Mediterraneo ‘Good restaurant with like the name says mediterranean food and Pizzaaaaa!
- Restaurant Blue Corner ‘Go here for real indonesian Flores food!’
- Cafe In Hit & Coffee Shop ‘Best coffee in town and great cakes!
- The Night fish market is also a nice local way of eating your diner. Just pick out which fresh fish you want and watch it get grilled 🙂
